  • New Field Elementary School reviewed by a parent

New Field is one of the fastest growing CPS schools and a gem of the Rogers Park neighborhood. The administration is exceptional and teaching staff is motivated, experienced and inspiring. My son loves the library (complete with a published librarian), the music and art teachers, and the tech lab and teacher. They use Eureka math curriculum, a really innovative and visual approach to math (wish I'd learned math that way!). There is a strong emphasis on reading and language, and my son's classroom is full of great books. Over 40 languages are spoken at the school and the community really embraces and honors diversity. Parents are welcoming and very involved, and are working hard to make the middle school (Eugene Field) a great neighborhood option for 5-8th grade. The school lives its mission of "respect, responsibility and collaboration." We fell in love when we toured the school and are so pleased with everything about New Field!

Decide how to spend $1 million: Participatory Budgeting for 2017 begins next week
After an especially tough election week, isn't it time to feel good about voting and democracy? The next round of participatory budgeting is about to begin! This is when you and your neighbors decide how to spend over $1 million in improvements for the 49th Ward.

  • Again, wouldn't it be nice if the alderman put this much effort into addressing the fundamental problems of the community? Even better if he focused his efforts away from pandering to his non-resident campaign donors and onto addressing the real problems that have plagued our community for decades.

Chastising residents from a keyboard during working hours and making false claims that nobody else works to better the community wastes everyone's time.

Joe, maybe it was "an especially tough election week" for you, but my co-workers (suburb) and I are very, very happy.

  • The Raging Scotsman Mindful, compassionate skeptic

Indeed, PEACE is what is in short supply. PEACE for those so affected by poverty they find gangs to be their only viable outlet for frustration. PEACE for those affected by the loss of family members to violence and Draconian drug laws that criminalize addicts, not just dealers, breaking up families and leading to rising rates of delinquency. PEACE to those who job it is to clean up the mess left behind by those lost souls perpetrating the violence.
