No parking on Ashland between Farwell and Morse 8/22

Around 11 am today they put up signs saying there's no parking from 7 am-4:30 pm today and for the next few days. Odds are they won't even do any work there today, but I moved my car just in case and thought I'd give a general warning to all.

Band Practicing on 1600 Block of West Farwell?

For about the last 6 months, a band has been practicing on West Farwell in the afternoon and on some evenings.

Does anyone know what can be done about this? I've called 911 several times but the noise continues.

  • My opinion is that you're on the right track with trying to contact an owner or property manager ... Or calling cops about the windows (you'll probably have the best luck using the legal jargon and calling it a private space that they have made open, so their amplified sound...

My opinion is that you're on the right track with trying to contact an owner or property manager ... Or calling cops about the windows (you'll probably have the best luck using the legal jargon and calling it a private space that they have made open, so their amplified sound is disturbing the public space).

You could also try figuring out who actually lives there and having someone (another neighbor who shares your frustration) contact them individually. That way you can have a calm conversation with one or 2 people, rather than a confrontation with a room full people/musicians in the middle of rehearsing. The latter would absolutely be a bad idea.
Caps meeting and contacting the alderman might work, but I think that would probably take longer.

  • Oh, and from my own personal teenage experience ... when you're young and don't have as many responsibilities, sometimes you're just oblivious to how obnoxious loud music and other disturbances are ...
Once someone took the time to show me and talk to me calmly about it, we can to a compromise. I wouldn't take someone yelling "be quiet" out the window seriously. I think that just adds fuel to the fire.

Gunshots?

Did I hear gunshots? I'm at Farwell & Ashland and they sounded like they were from the South.

  • eagledrc Farwell and Ashland

I think it's a generally good area. Farwell & Ashland seems to be a hotbed for gang activity - I think some gang members live in a building on Ashland. But otherwise it seems okay. I think Sheridan and Pratt would be a fine place to live.

  • 3 gunshots around 2 AM at Morse and Ashland. Fast police response but scary.

What's a seed library?

Well, seed libraries take on many forms and bring back an ancient tradition of seed saving. In today’s society they serve as a place for community members to come together to learn about seed saving practices and to save and share locally grown seeds for free.

LETS GO is interested in supporting a community team to help implement this project in the neighborhood. Are you interested in seed saving? THEN WE WANT YOU!

Come to our 1st information meeting this Wednesday to get involved and help shape this project.

Thank YOU Christopher of Estes...For making my point.

You do not know who "aims to murder" and who does not. And making sweeping assumptions about a group and acting upon those assumptions based on nothing more than paranoid speculation is like reading a portion of a manifesto by Joseph Stalin.
Fortunately, your opinion is shared by a minority in this country.

Why thank you. Can we all agree that certain gangs operate with the intent to do harm to others, and that having guns on public ways should be illegal. Especially if they are unregistered. The definition of a gang, according to the dictionary is - any gathering of 2 or more people. This can mean a church group, classroom, or gathering of congress. When the gangs commit felonies or other crimes, that is indeed the crime. To assault and disrupt the way of life for honest, hardworking citizens, is illegal. I do not always agree with certain laws, or the actions of some politicians as long as it follows the constitutional rights of all citizens, and those visiting from abroad.

I do think the involvement of a police state, or big brother society can make things worse of course. I saw Robocop and Nonstop and do acknowledge the inherent sin that breach of technology incurs. I know enough about computers to know that anyone can make up a fake identity to do harm to others. Unfortunately with the recession many are doing this to prey on the hopes and dreams of those looking to make a better life for themselves. I rarely do business with any place before doing a thorough check on how they handle disputes, because money does not grow on trees.

I think that police agencies should ditch the marked and unmarked squad cars for used Nissans or Chevys and go truly undercover. I think the concealed carry law was a big mistake, as it was not fully defined before it became a law. Unless we all either decide to quit our day jobs to become police officers, or police ourselves we need to go over each law and see how it can potentially harm someone.

Shooting on Greenview?

I just happened to be walking home from the Morse red line when I saw CPD had like 20 squad cars on Farewell & Greenview with the whole block and intersection cordoned off. It looks as if someone just got shot. Am I correct in that assumption? If so, anyone have any info?

  • Ingvald Doing my part to do no harm

2 young male's were shot. Earlier today in the alley that runs parallel to Morse and from Farwell to Morse shots were also fired.

  • Okay. Because this shooting looks as if it happened recently. Like around 10:30. They had Pratt to Farewell blocked off on Greenview. No police in the alleys. And there was what seemed to be a body in the street on Farewell. So possibly a separate shooting?

  • D Hype yes there was 2nd shooting on Farwell and Greenview recently 2 people where wounded.

Blue on Blonde, Part 1: Most Likely You Build Your Way (and I’ll Build Mine)

1631 W. Farwell, Rogers Park – opened in 1964. This site follows a familiar historical arc for the time period – in April 1963, a doctor living at this address passed away. In August, the “old house” and its lot went up for sale for $26,000. Thirteen months later, the new building was ready.

1534-1536 W. Farwell  Avenue, Rogers Park – Chicago; opened by 1968. Builder: Louis Bender.

This article has 27 other Chicago locations (Show)

2740 W. Pratt, West Ridge - Chicago. David W. Schultz Co., builder; opened by 1965.

1322 W. Chase Avenue, Rogers Park – Chicago. Opened 1965, by Birger Construction Co., replacing a converted house previously on the site. Birger also did  an apartment building at 7621 N. Sheridan that uses the same corner-pier vocabulary, but in reddish-orange brick.

6116 N. Hermitage Avenue, opened 1964, with studio, 1- and 2-bedroom apartments; operated at the time by the McCarthy Management Corporation. No word on the builder.

4850-4856 N. Paulina Avenue – opened by 1966, by Luna Construction Co., replacing a house on the site (previously home to a family whose four sons all served in World War I.)

7256 N. Bell, Rogers Park – Chicago. J. & H. Construction Co. buiders, 1967.

7241 N. Claremont Avenue, West Ridge – Chicago. Opened in 1962, replacing a 4-unit apartment building on the same site.

1535 W. Touhy, Rogers Park – Chicago. Open by 1968, possibly by 1965.

1918 W. Touhy Avenue, Rogers Park – opened 1966. It was under the same rental management as the previous building (1631 Farwell).

1615-17 W. Touhy, Rogers Park – Chicago. Doesn’t appear in the classifieds until 1971, which would make it rather a latecomer, but would also perhaps explain the unusual gabled roof.

7555 N. Oakley Avenue, Rogers Park – Chicago. Open by 1965, M. Chapelski Construction Co. builders.

7418 N. Oakley Avenue, Rogers Park -Inside, 6 apartments: three 1-bedrooms and three 2-bedrooms. No word on the builder, but in 1963 it was owned by the First National Bank of Skokie.

4744-46 N. Paulina, opened in 1967.

2700-2704 W. Pratt Avenue, West Ridge – Chicago. A 15-apartment building opened by 1967; builder David Schultz, who also built the blue-toned one across the street.  Familiar elements include the piers, the grid of rectangles, and the open rectangles over the entries.

2001-2007 W. Touhy  Avenue, Rogers Park – Chicago, open by 1968.

1844-1846 W. Birchwood Avenue – an 11-apartment building open by 1967; builder Sam Toporek Construction Company.

1813-1819 W. Touhy  Avenue, Rogers Park – Chicago. Open by 1966; builder: Sam Toporek Construction Company, same as the previous building.

1623-27 W. Greenleaf Avenue, Rogers Park – Chicago

1538-40 W. Chase Avenue, Rogers Park – Chicago. Open by 1966; builder M. Chapelski Construction.

7744 N. Eastlake Terrace, Rogers Park – opened in 1963, advertised by Sunset Realty.

2155 W. Arthur Avenue, West Ridge - Chicago, south of Warren Park.

6117 N. Mozart Avenue – Chicago

1628 W. Touhy, Rogers Park – Chicago

1236 W. Touhy, Rogers Park – Chicago

5710 W. Lawrence Avenue, Portage Park – Chicago. Opened 1964. Vertical window bands, diamond patterned doors and not much else. The gabled roof looks bizarrely out of place, like it landed from another city.

6107 N. Kenmore – today it’s the Sacred Heart Friary, home of the St. Bonaventure Province of Conventual...

Kenmore Place, at 6012 N. Kenmore – a 4-Plus-1 near Loyola University. Appears to have opened 1958, which if correct would make it the oldest building in this set.
