Helen, the fact that "Juneway Jungle" is now a perjorative instead of just a neighborhood nickname like "Old Irving Park" means that things have gone very, very wrong, and that can only be cured by good neighbors like you and FutureExChi (there have to be others) who are sick of what's going on to do something about it. Something crazy. Like taking pictures and video of things you see going on (1 picture=1000 words; 1 video=1million) and giving them to the alderman and the police. (Videos, shot by one concerned neighbor, is one reason that drug ring on the west side got broken up.) If necessary, contact the landlords involved. Contact the media. Keep a database of the problem buildings and a list of when you've called the police and why. And when one of these buildings has a date in Housing Court, somebody, (more than likely retired) is going to have to show up to advocate for concerned residents. If Section 8 renters are the problem, there needs to be an ongoing dialogue with the CHA.

Sound extreme, Helen? It is. It's the difference between popping pills and invasive surgery. But sometimes, the surgery is the only thing that works.

And I'm here to tell you Helen, staying up in the grilles of the people who can do something about this is not going to win you any popularity contests. You may be called "crazy" and worse, as I have, by some of your less courageous neighbors, the slumlords who operate some of these buildings, and the problem tenants themselves. But you've lived there 55 years and, presumably, you'd like to see "Juneway Jungle" become just a nickname again, so it shouldn't matter.

I came to Chicago from the Philippines. I love this city and its people. Although I am aware of the problems with guns and violence since I happen to live in the not so good part of Woodlawn. I think we need to come together as artistmac has advocated and reclaim the neighborhoods we are in. There is more than the guns and gangsters problems. The root cause maybe is breakdown of family values, and the absence of faith and spirituality as I see it. Philippines is poor but family and community values are deeply rooted in us. These young folks who involve in gangs are lost children who wants to belong. Too bad, they can only find it in gangs. And we can't rely only on government to clean that up. As they say it takes a whole village..

  • Harte Elementary School reviewed by a parent

We are very excited that our daughter will be starting Kindergarten at Harte this fall. I disagree with the poster below who stated that the schools in the area worth exploring are selective enrollment, private, or out of the district. We chose to send our daughter to Harte despite multiple offers to selective enrollment and magnet schools because we love walking to our great neighborhood school. Our daughter attended the wonderful pre-K program at the school for the past two years, and we couldn't have been happier with it. There is a strong administrative team that is responsive to parents' ideas and concerns. As a volunteer, I have worked with teachers at every grade level who are dedicated and knowledgeable. The pre-K and K teachers are both National Board Certified teachers and incredibly gifted and caring. There are some things to work on at Harte, but I don't think a perfect school exists in CPS-or anywhere! They are working to build stronger parental involvement and to gain more support from the community, for example. However, this neighborhood school is a hidden gem in CPS and we are so excited to be a part of it. The amazing new playground doesn't hurt either:)

Hyde Park's retail revival is on a roll

For years, some Hyde Parkers lamented having to leave the community to catch a show or buy a belt. Now, a restaurant and a cinema at 53rd Street and Harper Avenue, above, and new shops nearby have given the retail corridor a “fresh, vibrant and young” vibe.

"It has crushed our expectations," said Merges, who this fall plans to open a second Yusho location in Hyde Park, at 53rd and Kimbark Avenue. "It's like people have been waiting for businesses to come down and help revitalize it."
