March's Final Police Blotter, by Mark Schipper (April's Blotters to come)

Michael Tingling of the 7100 block of N. Ridge Blvd. was pronounced dead of a heart attack March 19 at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston.

The victim had been on the 2700 block of W. Lunt Ave. when he was surrounded. The first man approached him from the front while the second and third came from behind, he said.

The victim, 32, said she had returned about 9:30 p.m. to her apartment building on the 2400 block of W. Fitch Ave. She had seen two men standing near the back door.

The 20-year-old victim was attacked about 11:40 p.m. near the corner of N. Kenmore and W. Hollywood avenues. He said a man in his middle or late 40s had confronted him and claimed he had never returned a cell-phone that belonged to him, the attacker.

A mother of one of the boys accompanied them about 7:20 p.m. to 20th District police headquarters, 5400 N. Lincoln, to make the report.

The boys said they were shoved from behind while riding through an alley just south of 5600 N. Lincoln Ave. Each of their cell-phones fell out of their pockets when they hit the ground.

A woman was robbed March 17 stepping off a CTA bus near 4800 N. Broadway, CPD reported.

Tingling, 59, passed away about 2:45 p.m., less than 45 minutes after he'd been in a fist fight with a stranger on the 7100 block of N. Clark St.

That stranger turned out to be 59-year-old Joseph Firek of the 7000 block of N. Clark St. He was identified by multiple eye-witnesses as the second man in the fight. Firek, who is white, has been charged with First Degree Murder and a Hate Crime.

The 19-year-old had been attacked on the 1200 block of W. Albion Ave. about 8:20 p.m., according to CPD. He told officers he had heard fast footsteps coming from behind just before a man grabbed hold of him and his backpack.

The boys were walking on the 2900 block of W. Cortland Ave. when they encountered a middle-aged black male. He had pointed to a white van parked on the street and asked if they wanted to get inside.

A 10-year-old boy and 13-year-old girl were walking to school on the 1700 block of N. Larrabee St. when a gray sedan pulled alongside them. The driver had rolled down a window and said, "Come over here."

A third home on the 2100 block of Sheffield was broken into the afternoon of March 17.

Two other homes were damaged on the 2100 block of N. Fremont St. and the 800 block of W. Armitage Ave. between March 14-and-16.

Police presence on Pratt and Western, afternoon, April 6?

Hello neighbors,

Does anyone know why there were a bunch of cops directing traffic and blocking off part of western at Pratt yesterday (Sunday) around 2 or 3? Couldn't tell if it was for something at warren park or because of some sort of incident, and I couldn't find any news already posted.

  • Carl, seems like every group has to have its own parade and JR is right--residents need advance notification. I found out about this one only because there was a sign posted at the bus stop about the 155 reroute because of the parade. It's crazy.

  • JR West Ridge Neighbor Since 2003 Resident of West Ridge since 2003

The alderman attended the parade but it's not posted on the 50th ward calendar events.

Again, I am not opposed to the parade, but can the alderman provide the residents some courtesy with a heads up? Since the parade is not marching through her neighborhood, I guess it doesn't matter. Anyway, there are 2 more parades on Devon in June. They are usually a week a part, so plan ahead.
