The City will use $2.5 million in Tax Increment Financing (TIF) funds for the expansion and improvement of the park. Currently 3.5 acres, it will be expanded to five acres after the transfer of adjacent City-owned land and the closure of Union Street. The plans also call for the Chicago Park District to build a new fieldhouse, relocate the athletic field and playground, and additional landscaping.

Leticia Barrera, 32, was returning home with her three children after taking them trick or treating, when she was shot in the head in the 4800 block of South Seeley Ave. Detectives said she was not the intended target, but was shot by gang members firing at rivals.

Area One Detectives working the case used images from a police camera on the corner of 48th and Seeley to identify possible witnesses to the shooting. Community residents were able to identify witnesses on the surveillance tape. The offender was eventually identified.
