Leticia Barrera, 32, was returning home with her three children after taking them trick or treating, when she was shot in the head in the 4800 block of South Seeley Ave. Detectives said she was not the intended target, but was shot by gang members firing at rivals.

Orlando Avila, 18, of the 4500 block of South Wolcott Ave. was charged Thursday with one count of first degree murder of two counts of attempted murder after his arrest on Wednesday.

Area One Detectives working the case used images from a police camera on the corner of 48th and Seeley to identify possible witnesses to the shooting. Community residents were able to identify witnesses on the surveillance tape. The offender was eventually identified.
