  • 1500 block of North Damen Ave. Milwaukee Avenue approved as landmark district

    Covering the 1200 through 1600 blocks of North Milwaukee Ave.; the 1500 block of North Damen Ave.; and the 1900 and 2000 blocks of West North Ave., the development of this district took place in two phases – the first low-rise phase began after the Great Chicago Fire in 1871 and continued up to the introduction of the elevated train service; the second phase began in 1895 and ended at the start of the Great Depression in 1929.

    The City Council today established the Ogden-Pulaski Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District as a way to jump-start residential and commercial investment in the North Lawndale neighborhood.

  • Taylor Lauridsen Park Lower West Side, New City ok'd for open space projects

    The City will use $2.5 million in Tax Increment Financing (TIF) funds for the expansion and improvement of the park. Currently 3.5 acres, it will be expanded to five acres after the transfer of adjacent City-owned land and the closure of Union Street. The plans also call for the Chicago Park District to build a new fieldhouse, relocate the athletic field and playground, and additional landscaping.

  • Sangamon Paseo Lower West Side, New City ok'd for open space projects

    The Council allocated $150,000 in Open Space Impact Fees for the development of a linear park on the Sangamon right-of-way between Cullerton Avenue and 21st Street. The Department of Transportation will design and construct the park, and will enter into an agreement with the non-profit Resurrection Project for the long-term maintenance.

    Under this proposal, the City and Chicago Park District would exchange parcels at 74th and Woodlawn in the Grand Crossing neighborhood in order to move the current Woodlawn Park across the streets to 7329 S. Woodlawn Ave. in order to redevelop and enlarge the park from .38 acres to 1.25 acres in size. The City would use the old park facility as part of a proposed affordable housing development project. The Park district has committed $400,000 to the park’s development.
