About bike rack installations

Summary

Every year, about 500 bicycle racks are installed throughout Chicago. In this section of EveryBlock, we publish the locations of recently installed racks, according to the Bike Parking Program, which is part of the Chicago Department of Transportation's Bicycle Program. This means you can get notified when racks are installed in your neighborhood.

For each bike rack installation, we provide the location and installation date. In most cases, we also publish the name of a nearby establishment (e.g., "Bike rack installed near Burger King").

The data comes from a Chicago Department of Transportation feed provided by the Chicago Bike Parking Web site, which displays all bike rack requests, and their survey and installation status. New racks are installed in batches and will appear on EveryBlock after the installation — we look for new data daily.

What else should I know about bike racks in Chicago?

Residents can request bike racks by calling 311 or by visiting the Chicago Bike Parking Web site. It can take several months for a rack to be installed after the request is made, or it can happen in a few weeks. You can follow requests on the bike parking Web site.

Many requests aren't approved. The Bicycle Parking Program surveys each requested location and decides on individual requests based on a variety of factors, including whether there's sufficient demand and necessity, whether the location is on public property, and whether there's a concrete surface suitable for mounting the rack.

For more about what qualifies a location for a bike rack, which locations are best and what kind of locations don't qualify, visit the Chicago Bike Parking Web site.
