For years, the Second City Cop blog has been the "go to" resource for knowing what's actually going on at the CPD and not having to filter through the lack of relevant information or cover-ups by the local media. Now all of sudden the entry is now missing entirely from Google. You can type "second city cop" and "second city cop blog" and it used to be the #1 hit (with good reason, a hugely popular following), but now it's just a bunch of news stories talking about the blog itself.

Did Rahm Emmanuel ask them to remove it? Fear of the common people knowing what's really going on? This wouldn't be the first time he's tried media cover-ups since being in office--first the North Ave beach incidents, etc. Are we in communist China? Where will this insanity end? Is this better or worse than Daley? I'm not sure.

I'm sure if this story gets any wind anywhere, Google will lie and take the fall by saying it was a mistake in their search algorithm... surely?

  • Patricia Y. Multi-year resident and activist

Thx, This is the first I've heard of "SCC" but if it returns I'll certainly be a new follower.

  • This is a ridiculous conspiracy theory. Google does not simply remove websites at the request of politicians. Ask Rick Santorum.
    http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=164734

  • Perhaps we should not be so quick to start assigning blame & spreading rumors about people until there are actual FACTS to support them.

  • Inactive user

    Yikes!
I used to go there sometimes for crime news. Rahm could actually get rid of a personal blog? I guess its possible if he found out who the blogger was - could say it was a violation of his employment contract.

  • Inactive user

I LOVE that blog. I can't believe it. That blog was around for a very long time.

  • Walk-About One Eye Open

This entire RANT is without ANY evidence! What a crock!

Just for those who are curious.

  • Adrian H. Web developer, NW side

Save your conspiracy theories. The notion of Google censoring a blog because Rahm Emmanuel is ludicrous. Google takes this stuff very seriously and does not cater to the whims of politicians.

One possible explanation is technical: it looks like Second City Cop is blocking robots from indexing it, per their robots.txt file: http://secondcitycop.blogspot.com/robots.txt

This is a file Web site owners can use to tell search engines whether or not to index them.

There's no story here. Let's move along, folks, and talk about more productive things.

  • Brad Software Dev and Cup Cakes

Adrian is totally right. The fact is that the sites covering the blog are WAY better at Search Engine Optimization [SEO]. Google didn't change anything.

So if the person that does the blog contacts an organization that can help with SEO, they would get their well deserved ranking back. I bet they could even get a charitable offering.

  • Perhaps if you spent a fraction of the time it took you to come up with that theory and actually look for it, you would have your answer. Try putting it in your favorites next time, cut down on the panic.

  • Google is still indexing the site. If you google "Valadez Trial Moved" - you will find a link to the second city cop blog on the first page. The whole notion of "organic search" on google has been going away as they cater the search results to your user preferences (if you want to see what google thinks it knows about you, visit this url: http://www.google.com/ads/preferences).

I think it's a bit premature to accuse Rahm of something like this. Search engine optimization (SEO) is a whole industry in itself - you would really have to know more about the vagaries of how google does page rankings, etc before you can toss around accusations like that.

See explanation by Second City Cop.

  • gRegor M New North Center resident from Indianapolis

Thanks, Adrian. I laughed when I read this post, but I hadn't thought of the robots.txt explanation. That makes perfect sense.

d3: You might direct the author(s) of SCC to this help document so they can turn their search indexing back on: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Webmasters/thread?tid=0b73b1c07bb31187&hl=en

  • Sorry but talk about ridiculous accusations! I have no idea why the blog isn't there but to jump to the conclusion that the mayor had it taken down? He is actually doing a good job so far and I don't believe he has time to worry about a blog. He has serious things to take care of. Please try to make sense.

  • BTH

The point isn't that the person can't find the blog or that the blog ceases to exist, it is simply that when you type second city cop into google, it does not bring up the blog, whereas in the past, it returned it as the #1 search without any issues. However, as Adrian pointed out, it is most likely an indexing/SEO issue.

  • Shawn Ritchie South Side transplant to North Center since 2007

Nice work, d3. This is the most libelous post I've seen yet on Everyblock, which is saying something. Care to pony up one iota of evidence that Rahm even asked for that to happen? Have you BEEN to Communist China and tried to use their internet as compared to ours? And I LOOOOVE your "even if Google says "um, no, we don't that" they're LYING!!!" pre-accusatory stance as well.

Grow up a bit, learn how the world works in reality, and then maybe you can try participating in a forum populated with adults again. Do a modicum of research on how SEO works and you'd understand why the results shake out like they do and wouldn't have had to make such a ridiculous, ass-of-yourself accusatory post in the first place. There's plenty of reasons to question the Powers That Be without making stuff up out of whole cloth.

  • Jason 11-year resident of Lakeview (Boystown)

Well at least several more people know of this blog now. I, for one, am a new subscriber. Thx.

  • d3 NOH

(i never said he removed the blog, i said it was removed from google as a search listing)

their robots.txt file is actually correct I think... It's disallowing the crawling for everyone by *, BUT then allowing googlebot to crawl:

    User-Agent: googlebot
    Disallow: /search
    Allow: /

... and as documented by google that should be correct even though the disallow of * was first it should interpret the allow: / as an override since it's more specific

"So what gives? This appears to be a concerted effort by someone to minimize the significance of the blog."

    Quote from "Second City Cop."

Seems like he thinks something may be afoot.

Why all the purple prose and outrage over simple questions/speculation?

  • gRegor M New North Center resident from Indianapolis

Because it's ridiculous and baseless speculation (by both parties)?

  • I read SCC quite a bit and there seems to be a bit of an "us vs. the world" mentality so I'm not surprised that they're jumping to the conclusion they've jumped to.

I doubt the mayor has enough sway to tell Google to silence SCC>.

Simple question and speculations, Becky, are always welcome. Outright accusations against specific people without even Shred #1 of evidence, alongside accusations of Chicago being Communist China, "insanity", pre-rejecting the obvious and simple answer on Google's behalf of "no, we don't do that"... seems to be more in line with your labeling as "purple prose" than anything else in this thread.

SCC is a bit paranoid, though I do consider it quite a valuable resource vis-a-vis the inner workings of the CPD and how politics affects it. However, it is, for obvious and defensible reasons, _very_ biased in favor of the cops themselves. That's fine, they feel the media is totally against them and want to have a place where they can speak their side, and it provides that outlet well.

I'm just not in favor of making accusations in public without even the slightest evidence of proof. Makes the accuser sound like an idiot and, as evidenced by everyone's responses in this thread, mine included, doesn't exactly generate any useful dialog, either. Just disgust.

  • hjd 10-year Lincoln Park Homeowner

    Hi All,

This is just a change in how Google's algortihm works. It affected my brother-in-law's small business in the same way--it just doesn't show up in search results like it used to.

It's no conspiracy or evildoing on the part of Google, you just have to understand it this way: Google is only successful if people find what they are searching for, and quickly. Therefore, Google scores websites according to how well the site delivers the information that the searcher is looking for. It's much more complex than that, but that is the simple explanation. Google is actually on the side of the searcher--they only win if you do.

HOWEVER, it clearly broke down in this instance. Thanks to Melanie B. for the direct link to the site.

  • d3 NOH

it's not totally baseless, the city has a long history of censoring the local media. I won't get into details here, but have very close friends who work for the city and know how the interact with media. If you think the city of Chicago doesn't censor and strong-arm our media into reporting or not reporting what we read, you're naive. Even since taking office, Rahm has had some very public exposure on the issue.

  • Pete F. Lifelong Chicagoan, Proud Democrat

For what it's worth, Google owns Blogspot, the platform on which SCC is published. If they really had a problem, they could shut down the blog for violations of TOS, or whatever else they see fit. They've done it before.

  • And people make up what they want to about whoever is in office or government to suit their own personal agendas. Not everything is a conspiracy or evildoing on the part of government.

  • Inactive user

I thought the post was a joke! It's serious!?

Blue Ribbon Award for the craziest post I've seen on here.

  • I would suggest anyone that believes that this is a conspiracy take up a fund to bid on the google adwords "second city cop".

  • I work in SEO. The robots.txt file is case-sensitive. The blogger accidentally blocked Google in his robots.txt file. They CAN'T crawl the site since they don't have permission.

    http://secondcitycop.blogspot.com/robots.txt

  • Anyone who believes the city dictates what the media reports clearly hasn't paid attention to the many news stories about city workers not doing their jobs; wasting taxpayer money; etc.

  • Jason W Lifelong Chicagoan

Adrian and Kristina are correct; there is a simple technical explanation for this, as they have outlined. The site owner needs to fix literally a single letter of code, and his site will return to Google.
Despite that, I'll lays odds this conversation goes on and on.

  • gRegor M New North Center resident from Indianapolis

Interestingly, since it's a Blogspot blog, the robots.txt must be generated automatically based on the settings.

My guess is that it's an old Blogger version and if they just go in to settings and select "Yes" to display in searches, Blogspot will re-write the robots.txt correctly. I left a comment on SCC to this effect.

  • paranoid much?

Went to the site and took look. There must be another place to get crime news. This seems more like Rush Limbaugh ranting his usual stuff. One has to overlook many rants about Obama to find something of value regarding crime.

  • Shawn Ritchie South Side transplant to North Center since 2007

Margaret: It IS very right-wing; like I said in a previous post, it's a place for put-upon cops to vent, and it tacks to the right in a sub-group (cops) that is already pretty right-wing to begin with. It's very pro-guns, anti-commanders, anti-city-gov't, anti-any-gov't., wrapped up in a big shiny anti-Obama blanket with a thin ladle of racism dripped over the top. There's useful info there, but I usually feel like taking a shower after spending any amount of time reading it.

None of which lends dime one of credence to accusations that Rahm paid Google to downrank its searchability, which is still the most laughable thing I've ever read on Everyblock.

  • Inactive user

Maybe it's been moved to "THIRD City Cop."

  • Inactive user

Yee-ikes, I've never seen so many Rahmbots on one page. Must be a world record.
Yes, "Cop" is pretty right wing but it is still interesting and has lots of "inside" Chicago news.

  • Shawn Ritchie South Side transplant to North Center since 2007

Ah, Rahmbots. No, Becky, just because I need to point out the staggering idiocy of the original post does not somehow mean I blindly support everything Rahm does. I just absolutely believe that what he was accused of in the original post is a) not possible and b) laughable to consider in the first place. The slathering of insanity that accompanied that first accusation was just poop icing on the crap cake that that post was overall, and it merited being called out for what it was.

I guess some of us just don't see the world in that binary, "with us or against us" way you seem to.

  • Jason W Lifelong Chicagoan

If the blog owner is reading this, they can fix the error in Google Webmaster Tools > Site Configuration > Crawler Access.

Then they might want to issue a correction to the rabidly paranoid, ill-informed post on the front page of their site. d3, same goes for you.

  • Inactive user

Try Bing. It's listed as the first entry.

Try Yahoo!. It's listed as the first entry.

  • Jason W Lifelong Chicagoan

Update: the site owner fixed it:
    http://secondcitycop.blogspot.com/robots.txt
    But hasn't issued a correction.

You'll see the site back in search results the next time the crawler comes by.

And then we can all toast another victory over the evil Google and its Rahmbots! Well done, angry mob!

There has been talk lately that Google, traditionally very liberal and supportive of the DNC, has now bought HUGE, unprecedented numbers of lobbyists and is injecting very large amounts of money in very conservative projects, PACs, etc.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/09/25/google-antitrust-microsoft-war_n_976804.html

Is it related? Is one a possible explanation for what was observed here? Don't know. Decide for yourselves.

  • Jason W Lifelong Chicagoan

Technical explanations above. The site owner was at fault. Nothing to see here, move along.

  • Shawn Ritchie South Side transplant to North Center since 2007

Richard D: What part of the technical explanations didn't work for you to where you had to toss NEW unfounded allegations of nefariousness into the mix? Every big company, if they have an ounce of sense, lavishes money on both sides of the aisle so that they have an ally regardless of who's in power. Google's just realizing that they need to be doing that and so they are.

"Here's a blazingly libelous insinuation! Is it TRUE?!?!?! Don't know! Decide for yourself!"... good to see you've memorized the FOX playbook regarding getting crappy things about your enemies to become talking points regardless of their accuracy.

We need to have a Dumbest Thread of the Year contest because this mother has my vote.

  • d3 NOH

there was no technical explanation. the robots.txt file today is exactly as it was yesterday... "Update: the site owner fixed it:" ...no they didn't. they say right on their post today that they changed nothing. google did visit their site personally, apparently, and somehow in the back end it magically fixed itself. just to clear that up, it still wasn't the robots.txt file.

  • @d3 - It actually does look like the robots.txt file has changed. I looked yesterday and today's looks different - I certainly don't remember seeing this line.

john, i have a browser tab open from yesterday before i even started this thread (yes, i actually checked) and it's exactly the same robots.txt. (+it's copied/pasted somewhere above). they may have changed something, but it wasn't that.. the blog owner was on duty during the course of the day when this thread was going on, and they note right on their post today they didn't change anything

but yes, this is a good reason to lock a thread. but you can unsubscribe brad, uncheck the little star.

    Disallow:

    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /search

    Sitemap: http://secondcitycop.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?orderby=updated

The / is missing under disallow. See the difference now? Enough with unfounded conspiracy theories.

  • d3 NOH

ah i fell victim to caching today. they did change it, but there was debate that it was wrong to begin with..

    User-Agent: googlebot
    Disallow: /search
    Allow: /

would've allowed the googlebot in in the first place, despite where it ws in the file (the only technicality that in another forum they were debating over was that it came after the * disallow, but googlebot's documentation states it takes the most specific record to it... others agreed)... do you know, did google recently change how they parse robot.txt files?

  • That's right, it does come after the * and it trumps that. Don't give contradictory rules. No idea about parsing procedure, just follow best practices and you'll have no problems regardless of who crawls your site.
