Apparently it's the end of the line for the Brand Brewery Complex - which abuts the Home Depot property on Elston (read more here: http://www.chicagoreader.com/Bleader/archives/2011/12/01/the-brand-brewing-complex-to-raze-or-not-to-raze)

From what I've been told, a demolition permit has been issued for the property and I received an email from salvage company "Urban Remains" that advertises they're working in the building. In fact, their website (urbanremainschicago.com) notes:

It's a sad statement, given the success of the Printed String Building (Elston/Logan) that this historic and beautiful, if neglected building, couldn't be re-used.

  • That is a shame. I bet that big box store will open and close within 5 years and then we'll all be stuck with yet another vacant white-elephant eyesore. The decision seems to have a very short-term perspective and isn't looking at the long-term good of the neighborhood or the city.

... heard a rumor it will be an HH Gregg.

    True? False?

  • 100% True. I know someone who was a tenant of the building who lost their space. HH Gregg is the culprit.
