This is a screen shot of a police officers computer. The image shows all the patrol officers beats in the district. The areas where it says "down car" means there is no beat officers. Do you feel safe? Or that your thousands of dollars of property tax, bag tax, city sticker, red light camera, speed camera...etc. are being spent for your safety? This is a link to secondcityblog..

  • Yeah, actually, I do feel relatively safe.

  • Dan G Scratch and win

I feel relatively safe .. not because of the police.

  • I feel safe because my cousins Smith and Wesson are with me

  • SCC Northwest sider my whole life.

So you're saying that all those neighborhoods on the south and west sides with tons of cops must be really, really safe?

  • "this is the song that goes thru my mind as I think about this"

Down car because Car 54 was retro fitted into the Munster Wagon.

  • I do think more of a "police presence" in the neighborhood would be nice. I seldom see a police patrol day or night. I used to see them all the time. Now I haven't seen anything in the area since last summer. Suspect the force is very short on patrols. Yes I think it would be nice to actually see a squad car on occasion.

  • 16th police district is huge and includes O'hare. They are spread thin I'm sure with most being by the airport. This is speculation, of course. Hopefully some more get assigned as new officers are hired and reassignment occurs. Here's a of download of the map if anyone is interested: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=http://gis.chicagopolice.org/pdfs/district16.pdf&ved=0ahUKEwjH87DskeDSAhVBzoMKHZzXDaMQFggaMAA&usg=AFQjCNEAlmcu8FYUgDHAvO8rXuVtC-69pQ

I do feel safe for the most part. I work from home and see police drive through my alley and down my street at least once a day and I see them multiple times in the neighborhood while driving my son to/from school. While I am former law enforcement and know that the police are necessary for enforcing the laws, the safety of a particular neighborhood comes down to the people who live in the neighborhood and decide to either report crimes they see or suspicious activity or to just let it slide and expect that the police can be everywhere and somehow know how to stop crimes before they happen. Sure, a larger police presence would be great, but having a community that pays attention and cares enough to take an active role in stopping and preventing crime matters more as far as I can tell.

  • Well, I am glad someone sees them. I am at Laramie and Sunnyside. Used to see them about 3pm every day, change of shifts. I haven't seen ANY squad cars since July 2016? So, don't know. My block used to be the shortcut to the station during change of shifts. I do WATCH for them, but do not see them.

Cheryl, oddly, I am at Agatite and Linder on the North side with a view of Sunnyside and see cops along there all the time, often having stopped people. I see them around the corner of Sunnyside and Long frequently.

Not sure how they skip over Sunnyside and Linder.

They're in the ghettos on the South and West sides of chicongo. Ironically, they'll need to be recalled if and when Areana's version of Cabrini Green is built on Northwest Highway.

    I never see them

Superman, my cousins are Sig and Sauer. I also enjoy spending time with my buddies Colt and Remington. Occasionally my Uncle Ruger and I hang out as well. And yes, I also have cousins named Smith and Wesson. God Bless America!

I know the area is getting worst you must protect yourself

  • steven 60706 resident

You posted this before. If I stand behind my garage and spit it lands in the 16th district. I've had my garage in Norridge broken into twice. Never had anything broken into or stolen at my 60630 or 60656 properties

  • paul in jefferson jefferson park resident

I had a house in 60630, the house broken into and the garage three times in a period of 8 years,. I don't have that problem anymore but many break ins in area. I had locks on gates and reinforced jambs on doors with good deadbolts not homedepot garbage also two dogs. Many of my neighbors had cars garages and homes broken into even while at home.

  • I understand that there is a shortage of police officers at the 16th District but that's not their fault you have to put the where it co

  • I understand there's a shortage of police officers in the 16th District but it's not their fault it's the fault of our mayor in our alderman they are not doing enough to hire more police officers they took the officers out of northwest side and put them all on the south and west side

  • Craig E. Friend of Chicago

Amen to you CJC you have the right idea.
