Can anyone recommend any good blues bars in Ravenswood or Lincoln Square or thereabouts? I can't seem to find mention of any on yelp and the like.

I mean good, dedicated places to go hear some blues. Not just venues that may host blues artists from time to time (e.g. Martyrs, Old Town School).

Do any such places exist?

Honestly, I can't think of any dedicated blues venues in the general neighborhood. In fact, as far as dedicated music venues, the only other ones I can think of, off the top of my head, are Katerina's, Silvia's and, of course, the Green Mill.

  • The Mayne Stage is a great venue! This weekend:

Lynne Jordan @ The Mayne Stage, March 2-4

There really isn't one. Bring on the blues. Black Ensemble Theater production....I know Jackie Wilson's Story is more soul/r&b.

Just a couple Brown Line stops away to see some decent blues on Halsted, near the Diversey stop. Check out Kingston Mines and Blues almost across the street from each other. I saw Taj Majal one weekend and Sonny Seals the next. Although I haven't been out a lot around here (Ravenswood), I don't think there are a ton of dedicated blues places. You can always look up blues jams on any given night.

A bit south of there.. Kingston mines And buddy guy's were always the best blues venues.

  • I don't know of any blues clubs in the area. One I like a lot is called Rosa's on Armitage, near Kimball/Homan. Rosa married a Chicago Bluesman that escapes me now, her son Tony helps run the place.

Not sure if it was her hubby, but we used to go see Melvin Taylor there years ago. He played tuesday nights, I think. Would love a push for a Blues resurgence a la 1990's. I saw Buddy, Koko and BB on the same bill in New Mexico in 1992. I was lucky enough to see Albert Collins a handful of times here in Chicago...countless others. The MINES baby. Went to the old (but not original) Checkerboard Lounge on 47th....@ Pete F nice post! Anything to bring the blues music back into focus....I'm all for it!

Rosa's and Buddy Guy's Legends are the two up north that get the big local names like Lil Ed. Rosa's is in Logan Square. A small narrow bar really. Legend's is south and west of the loop. He opened a slick new space. There are a few in River North (?) - BLUES and Blue Chicago. I have not been in eons but they used to let you in each for the price of one. Some great blues from folks who may not have gotten big yet. Big Time Sarah is/was there regularly. I haven't done the Lincoln strip for ages - it seems a bit yuppified but no doubt good names. Also SPACE in Evanston has a variety of acts but lots of blues and cheap. I saw Eddie Clearwater there for 15 bucks. Great little space with a bar too. And free street parking.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I am pretty familiar with all the venues listed, except Rosa's, but alas, I was hoping to find something in the neighborhood.

    Dems da breaks.
