2 unmarked units pulled over just south of Lawrence on Rockwell, a number of cops, a number (5? 7?) of 20-something guys assuming the position on the trunks of the cop cars; cops accessorizing the Bad Boys wardrobes with special bracelets prior to providing transport back to the station for a little quality time.

Anybody know more about this?

I just turned on my police scanner not too long ago (before I saw this) and didn't hear anything.

Although must say "cops accessorizing the Bad Boys wardrobes with special bracelets prior to providing transport back to the station for a little quality time." is about the funniest way of saying that they got arrested that I have ever heard! I actually laughed so hard I started choking.

Wow. Really Bill. Not sure how I missed that. Maybe they finally busted the drive-through ?

I'm glad someone liked my little bit of prose overload. I didn't really mean to make too light of the situation. Cop work is tough work, and being a young nefarious character is probably no walk in the park either. The whole situation was no doubt much more serious than my tone suggested, for everyone involved.

Josh- a drive-through? Can you say more?

  • The no name bar on Rockwell and Lawrence has had a few dustups lately, but they seem harmless.

  • Bill Near Rockwell L

Which bar, the one on the north-west corner? That is called "Loafers" and yeah it can be a bit rough. It's something of a joint. There is also a bar a few doors south of Lawrence, east side of Rockwell, called "Red Lion" which is more genteel.

There's some history of bars / trouble around here. I understand that the place that used to operate on the southwest corner of Rockwell/Lawrence, called Go Go's (or more fitting with the older Greek character of this area, Gogos) - it got closed ~4 years ago for having coke dealing going on there. That's what I heard, anyway, I have no verification if it's true. After Go Gos, a number of others tried to make a go of it, place is empty / for rent right now.

And, what is now Rockwell Neighborhood Grill, used to be a Mexican seafood restaurant which operated as a front for a brothel upstairs and also a center for cocaine sales. Supposedly was busted / closed for that reason. Seized and then sold, now it's the well regarded Rockwells. Again, I have no documentation of this. HOWEVER I know the contractor who did the remodeling when it changed to Rockwells', and he has told me that when he was removing the old drop ceiling he found a kilo brick of coke up in the ceiling, which he surrendered to the police. I have no reason to doubt him, he is not given to tall tales.

    Bill, the description is priceless!

@Bill, he gave the kilo to the police? Man, that could have paid for a serious upgrade of the remodel . . .

  • There is another bar(?) across the street from Loafers, on the NE corner of that intersection, just north of the convenience store. I've seen my share of shady characters in front of that place, though certainly not as rowdy as the smoking crowd outside of loafers. It looks like a bar when the door is open, however most of the time the door is padlocked shut, but you can still hear music inside. Anyone know what this place is?

  • @Josh - "drive-through"?

  • Amy

Geez! I live near Lawrence Ave., and I'm constantly amazed at how many arrests take place just on that stretch of road!

@ monica - turn on your EveryBlock email.

Bill, when I read your message, I totally thought of Martin Lawrence and Will Smith (and then the theme song to "Cops" started playing in my head).

    @Josh, I'm curious as well...thanks

Oh yeah, isn't that a Korean place? Is that place sketchy?

  • Bill Near Rockwell L
  • Bill, the Korean place is not open for months, and then for a few days. I thinking who ever runs it doesn't do it for the income.

    How very inscrutable.

This bust might help with the problems at Gross Park mentioned in another thread, it's just a block away. If I lived by the park I'd make sure to ask about this at my CAPS meeting.
