I'm a semi-new owner right on the border of Avondale / Logan Square, and I was wondering if anyone knew of close community gardens in the neighborhood.
Not that I am aware Barnabas, however you could start one! enough lots it seems. What street/block are you on?
There is a community garden at Altgeld and Sawyer. http://altgeldsawyer.cornerfarmchicago.com/ It's the only one I am familiar with. Hopefully there are more and someone will update soon.
Here's a map of community gardens all across Chicago. Maybe you can find one nearby, or maybe there's one near where you go to school/work/whatever.
there is one i believe on drake near school street
@Jack, I live on the block with Brands Park (between Henderson & Melrose) - where have you seen good lots that could be used? Do you live in the neighborhood?
@MsMolly, is it a part of Avondale Park? I'll have to go check it out - any more specific directions as to where it is?
google a nonprofit agency called GreenCorps for more information about community gardens. This agency has a list of community gardens in the city and offers free plants of all sorts 3 times a year.
Barnabas, here's the link for the garden MsMolly mentioned.
There is a small garden west of you at Milwaukee and Central Park. I think they normally work on Saturday mornings. I can try and locate the contact information for you if you are interested.-erin.
Hey, thanks all! @Erin, that'd be great, could you see if there's any contact information?
Why don't the community gardens shovel the snow in the winter? Its very inconsiderate of your neighbors to only tend the property in the summer.
I know this is an old post, but I just discovered that you can look up community gardens by location on the park district website so I just wanted to pass the link along: http://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/facilities/community-gardens/
This is great! I love seeing other gardens and how people tend them so well. I'm still learning with my little backyard plot, but someday it'll look a little more impressive :)
